Enjoy soft, tall loaves of homemade sandwich bread with this easy recipe that yields fluffy, golden loaves perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 6.5 cups bread flour
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 1 cup whole milk (optional swap for water)
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 teaspoons instant yeast (or active dry yeast)
  • 3 teaspoons sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter melted (for brushing)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter for tins

Instructions

  • Grease two loaf tins and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk water and honey, then add yeast and let activate for 1 minute.
  • Add flour and salt to the mixture, stir until a shaggy dough forms. Knead in softened butter until smooth, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Shape the dough into a ball, place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 2 hours.
  • Divide the dough into two pieces, shape each into a log, and place seam side down in the prepared tins. Cover and let rise until the dough crowns over the rim, about 40-60 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the loaves for 40-42 minutes until deep golden. Brush tops with melted butter, cool in tins for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack.

Notes

Ensure the dough is slightly tacky but not sticky for best results.
