A delicious make-ahead breakfast combining bread, apples, and warm cinnamon, baked to perfection and topped with streusel.

Ingredients

Bread

  • 1 pound loaf Sourdough Or French Bread (cut into chunks)

Apples

  • 3 cups chopped apples (2 large apples)

Eggs

  • 8 large eggs

Milk

  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)

Heavy Whipping Cream

  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream

Sugar

  • ½ cup sugar

Light Brown Sugar

  • ¼ cup light brown sugar (unpacked)

Vanilla Extract

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Ground Cinnamon

  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

All-purpose Flour

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

Brown Sugar (firmly packed)

  • ¾ cup brown sugar (firmly packed)

Cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Apple Pie Spice

  • 1 ½ teaspoons apple pie spice

Salted Butter

  • ½ cup salted butter, cut into pieces

Instructions 

  • Grease a 9×13 inch casserole dish.
  • Chop bread into chunks and layer in the dish. Add chopped apples on top.
  • Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugars, cinnamon, and vanilla; pour over bread and apples. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (176°C). Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes.
  • Prepare streusel by mixing dry ingredients and cutting in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over baked casserole and bake for 5 more minutes.
  • Cool slightly, then serve warm with toppings like syrup or powdered sugar.

Notes

This casserole tastes best when eaten within 4 days. Reheat before serving for best results.
