Soft, hearty whole wheat dinner rolls perfect for any meal, with a wholesome flavor and fluffy texture.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour ((537g))
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast ((1 packet))
  • 1 ½ cups warm water ((295g, 100-110°F))
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar ((57g))
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter ((cubed, 57g))
  • 1 large egg (for the dough)
  • 1 large egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Instructions 

  • Combine all ingredients in a stand mixer and mix on low until incorporated, then knead on medium for 4 minutes.
  • Let the dough proof in a warm spot for 45 minutes to 1 hour until doubled.
  • Divide the dough into 12 pieces, shape into rolls, and place in a greased baking dish. Proof for 1 hour until tripled.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush rolls with beaten egg.
  • Bake for 25-28 minutes until golden brown and internal temperature reaches 185°F.

Ensure proper proofing for fluffy rolls and brush gently with egg wash for a shiny finish.
